Car Hire Menorca Ciutadella

Ciutadella is located on the west coast of the island of Menorca, and it is an exciting place, much more so in comparison to the other resorts along the coast, as there is much more to do than lying in the sun at the beach. The city of Ciutadella was previously Menorca’s commercial and cultural centre, brimming with history, nightlife and other little wonders.

It is not very challenging getting here from the airport, and the best option is to book a taxi or hire one from the arrivals hall, unless your holiday package includes airport transfer, in which case there is nothing to worry about.

On your way, you will come across a brilliant statue of a rearing stallion, which represent the Fiesta de San Juan. Initially, Cuitadella appears to be planned rather narrowly and is quite busy, but this is mostly because the population of the city is quite high at around 70,000 excluding visitors.

The city dates back to Roman times, when Ciutadella was known as the village of Jammona and used as a defensive area by the west coast during the Roman conquest back in 123 AD. Roman remain are still being found only a few metres under the ground by the people who live on the land.

It was the capital of the island until 1708 when the British occupied Menorca and Mahon was titled as the new capital despite the protests of residents and the Bishop of Ciutadella who was adamant on keeping his palace as and where it was. It has also always been a significant contributor to the Menorcan economy, being close to the island of Majorca.

The public transport is extremely well organised and maintained. There is a west coast bus service that operates several times a day towards many resorts on the island, and hourly buses run towards the capital, Mahon. It is possible to find bus timetables on the internet or at the bus stops themselves.

Although there is no beach here as whole, the nearest beaches are only some 3km away towards the south where you can participate in various water sports which have great facilities set up, including equipment hire. These include sun lounges as well as parasols and pedalos.
